Start with common local birds and learn their behaviour before chasing rarities. Predictable feeding routes, perches and calls usually produce better photographs than following a bird from place to place.
Fieldcraft that works
- ✓Use shutter priority or manual exposure with Auto ISO when birds are moving unpredictably.
- ✓Focus on the nearest eye and leave space in the frame in the direction the bird is looking or flying.
- ✓Watch behaviour first: repeated perches and feeding routes are more useful than immediately moving closer.
- ✓Record a broad location, date and field note so other people can learn without exposing sensitive sites.
Photograph responsibly
Never approach active nests, play calls repeatedly, block feeding routes or publish precise locations for vulnerable birds. A missed photograph is always preferable to disturbing wildlife.
