- Woodland with mature trees, particularly oak and beech, also found in parks and gardens with suitable tree cover in southern Britain.
- UK Distribution
- Resident throughout southern England and Wales, with distribution extending northwards into the Midlands and southern Scotland; absent from Ireland and northern regions.
- Diet
- Primarily insects and spiders, supplemented with nuts and seeds, especially hazelnuts and sunflower seeds from garden feeders in winter.

- Insects (beetles, caterpillars, earwigs), spiders, and their eggs

- Sparrowhawks, other raptors, and occasionally jays; eggs and nestlings vulnerable to woodpeckers and squirrels

- Behaviour
- Agile climbers with the ability to descend tree trunks head-first, using their strong feet and tail. Often seen visiting garden bird feeders, they are vocal birds with distinctive loud calls and are generally sedentary, defending territories year-round. Highly acrobatic and energetic, frequently foraging on bark and branches.
