Did You Know?
  • •Nuthatches are the only British bird that can walk head-first down tree trunks, using their strong claws and stiff tail feathers for support
  • •They wedge nuts (particularly hazelnuts) into tree bark crevices and hammer them open with their bill, a behaviour that gives them their common name
  • •Nuthatches plaster mud around their nest hole entrance to reduce the opening size and deter predators and competitors
  • •They have expanded their UK range northwards significantly over the past 50 years, likely due to milder winters and increased availability of garden feeders
  • •Their distinctive loud, repetitive 'chit-chit-chit' calls and whistling song are among the loudest sounds heard in British woodlands during breeding season
