Staffordshire and Cheshire together cover an unusually complete cross-section of English lowland wildlife habitat: ancient oak woodlands in the Churnet Valley, upland heath and pine plantation on Cannock Chase, reservoirs and marshes on the Trent floodplain, the salt-marsh mouth of the Dee estuary, and a lattice of reclaimed subsidence flashes across the Cheshire plain. The photographic prize here is the summer breeding trio: Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, and Wood Warbler. All three arrive from mid-April, and the reserve maintains nest boxes specifically to hold the Pied Flycatcher population. Males sing from prominent perches through late April and May, and predictable song-posts on the same oaks year after year make this one of the few UK sites where you can plan a Pied Flycatcher shoot rather than hoping to bump into one. Males churr from song-perches — usually dead branches on pines at the plantation edge — and hawk moths in silhouette against the sky. Consall Nature Park sits in the middle of it, and combines with adjacent Consall Woods and Cotton Dell to offer a proper day's photography without moving your car.

Kingfisher is the flagship species here, and the canal from Consall Forge up to the railway station holds a resident pair most years. Perches over the canal are limited and predictable — a specific reed clump, a low willow branch — and once you've found them, you can set up a hide with permission from the site office and shoot from six metres with a 400mm lens. Winter is often better than summer because leaf cover is thinner and the kingfishers hunt more visibly.

Grey Wagtail and Dipper both breed along the Churnet itself. The Dipper stretch above the confluence with the canal is the most reliable — search below any small weir or riffle from March onwards. Access is via a narrow lane down to Consall Forge, which has limited parking and no facilities. The Black Lion pub next door is open for lunch in warmer months. The Churnet Valley Railway runs steam locomotives on weekends between Cheddleton and Kingsley & Froghall — worth checking the timetable both for the whistles that flush birds and for the atmospheric compositions of steam through the trees.

Doxey Marshes (Stafford)

On the edge of Stafford town itself, Doxey Marshes is the most convenient wetland site in the county. It's a Staffordshire Wildlife Trust reserve running along the Sow floodplain — reedbeds, pools, willow carr, and a network of paths accessible from the M6 in 15 minutes.

Water Rail is the target species that most photographers travel here for. The reedbeds hold a strong population and, unlike most Water Rail sites, some individuals will emerge at path edges in winter, particularly when hard frost freezes their preferred cover. Patience wins — sit still on the boardwalk at first light in December or January, and one may creep out. A 400mm lens is enough; longer is better.

Cetti's Warbler is now well established on the reserve, and males sing explosively from cover through spring. Belvide and Blithfield Reservoirs (Staffordshire)

The two big Staffordshire reservoirs sit either side of Stafford and offer very different photographic prospects. Belvide, west of the county near Brewood, is a permit-only West Midland Bird Club site with three hides overlooking the water. It's a serious birdwatchers' reservoir — regular Great Northern Diver, Slavonian Grebe, Long-tailed Duck and Red-necked Grebe records — but photography is limited by the distance from hides to open water.

Blithfield, east of Rugeley on the Blithe, is larger and photographically friendlier. Access requires a permit from the Blithfield Anglers' Association, but the reservoir edges and causeway allow closer shooting than Belvide. Winter brings large numbers of wildfowl — Goldeneye, Goosander, Pochard, Wigeon — and passage waders drop in during autumn.

RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands (Cheshire)

Burton Mere is the most photographically productive RSPB reserve in the North West and one of the standout sites in England for wetland birds. Sitting at the southern edge of the Dee estuary near Neston, it combines freshwater scrapes, reedbeds and salt-marsh, with a network of hides that are genuinely close to the birds.

Marsh Harrier breeds on the reserve and can be photographed hunting over the reedbeds in summer. Little Egret, Great White Egret and Cattle Egret are all now regular. Windows are at appropriate heights for tripods, and light on both hides is best in the afternoon when the sun is behind you. Bring long glass — 500mm is the working minimum for scrape waders — and a beanbag rather than a tripod for hide use.

Access is £5 for non-members, and the visitor centre and café are unusually good by nature reserve standards. Open daily from 9.30am. The reserve links via footpaths to RSPB Parkgate a short drive north.

RSPB Parkgate and the Dee Estuary (Cheshire)

Parkgate is a photographic pilgrimage site because of one specific event: the high spring tide, when the entire Dee salt-marsh floods and every raptor and small mammal in it is forced up onto the marsh edge in front of the parade. Twice a year in most winters, high tides above about 9.4 metres bring Short-eared Owl, Hen Harrier, Merlin, Peregrine, Barn Owl and thousands of pipits and wagtails within 30 metres of the sea wall.

Check tide tables carefully. Tides above 10 metres in December, January, February and September are the events to plan around — the RSPB and local birdwatchers post details ahead of time. Marbury Country Park and Neumann's Flash (Cheshire)

Central Cheshire's cluster of subsidence flashes — Neumann's, Ashton's, Witton — is a genuinely underrated wildlife area. These water bodies formed where salt-mining subsidence collapsed farmland below the water table, and they now form a wildfowl and wader magnet in the middle of Northwich.

Marbury Country Park itself is free, open dawn to dusk, and gives access to Budworth Mere and the linked flashes. In winter, Goosander, Goldeneye and diving ducks are close from the mere-side path. Great Crested Grebe display in early spring from March, and the classic "penguin dance" — both birds rising vertically face-to-face with weed in their bills — happens most reliably in the third and fourth weeks of March.

Neumann's Flash next door produces waders on passage — Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Greenshank, Snipe — and holds regular Kingfisher on the small pool at the eastern edge. Delamere is the largest area of woodland in Cheshire and combines conifer plantation, ancient oak-birch woodland and peat mosses. It's a Forestry England site with pay-and-display parking, extensive path networks, and multi-habitat photography within a small area.

Adders and Common Lizards both occur on the drier heath and mossland areas, particularly around Blakemere and Hatchmere. Nightjars breed in the clear-fell areas — a completely different sub-population from the Cannock Chase birds. Crossbills feed on cones in the conifer plantations year-round and can be photographed at ground pools where they come to drink; scout for such pools around Barnsbridge Gates.

For woodland birds, Delamere holds the standard cast — Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Marsh Tit and Willow Tit — with Willow Tit still hanging on in small numbers, which is a real bonus given its steep decline elsewhere. Staffordshire and Cheshire wildlife photography is largely a public-access game, but three practical issues catch out first-time visitors.

The first is parking hours. Most nature reserves lock car park barriers at set times — 4pm, 5pm or dusk depending on season — and getting locked in overnight is a real risk if you're settled in a hide for dusk light. Check current closing times on the reserve website or laminated signage at the barrier before you commit to a late session. When in doubt, park on the public road outside the reserve.

The second is permits and hide bookings.
