Did You Know?
  • •American mink are not native to the UK but escaped or were released from fur farms from the 1950s onwards, establishing wild populations
  • •Mink are a serious threat to native water voles, which have declined dramatically partly due to predation by feral mink
  • •They have a distinctive musky scent used for communication and territorial marking
  • •Mink can hold their breath underwater for up to 30 seconds and can dive to depths of 2 metres
  • •They are often confused with the native European polecat, though mink are smaller, more aquatic, and have less contrasting facial markings
