Field note

This butterfly resting on bare sandy ground shows the characteristic cryptic brown underwing pattern of a Grayling, with mottled grey-brown coloration and a darker central patch, wings held tightly closed and tilted toward the sun to minimise shadow — a classic Grayling behaviour on warm sandy or rocky substrates. Or is it? Suggestions on identification welcome.
